HONOR

Our character trait for the month of July is one of our martial arts tenets – HONOR. In martial arts, honor is a code of conduct based on integrity, respect, and loyalty. It means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. This month as we honor the 250th celebration of the United States of America, we paused to reflect on our country’s freedoms and honor those men and women who made sacrifices for our freedoms today.

How can students demonstrate honor in their day-to-day life?

At Home:

  • By listening to their parents, grandparents, guardians and caregivers and honoring what they ask them to do — or not to do — even when they aren’t watching!
  • By respecting their siblings and their belongings.

At School:

  • By listening to their teachers and obeying the rules.
  • By doing their best on their schoolwork and doing their own work.
  • By being respectful of their classmates by keeping their hands to themselves.

In the Community:

  • By respecting others in a public place – by not being too loud or talking over other people.
  • By obeying the rules or policies of an organization or business.
  • By showing courtesy to anyone around them.

Martial arts students practice all of the elements of Honor in each class. They bow when they enter or exit the mat to show respect; when working with a partner they show honor to the higher rank; they do not talk during instruction time and they follow class procedures in an orderly and respectful way by not pushing or shoving when lining up in rank order.

Mr. Rose defines Honor as a gift you give to yourself. When you show respect and honor to others, you bring honor to your parents, your family and to yourself!
